Have we really seen the last of the snow?

Happily since we last wrote the weather in the Conwy Valley seems to have significantly improved and threats of late frost subsided. It was only a few weeks back that local gardeners were telling us that they were very afraid to plant for fear of destroying their new additions. Fingers crossed those days have finally gone. It will be a winter we won't easily forget! (STOP PRESS - Oh no, today's Daily Mail is reporting more snow for this weekend).

With every passing day we introduce new stock into the nursery and as well as a fantastic range of plants, the garden nursery shop provides a pleasing range of Welsh country made chutnies, jams and preserves. You may have also read recently that it's currently all rage to grow your own potato varieties and we have a fantastic range of seed potatos to help you get started. Starting a growing patch is great fun and a good way to get the kids interested in gardening (that's if you can prise the Playstations and Gameboys out of their hands). We've included a link to the new stock on this page.
Before we go can I remind you about a special event The Rowen Gardens Open Day which is happening further down the Conwy Valley on Sunday 9th May. About 15 lovely gardens are open for one day only! It happens once every two years so make sure you take the opportunity to visit this beautiful village. The event runs from 10.30am - 5pm. Admission is adult £5, children £1. All proceeds are in aid of Rowen Memorial Hall and if you'd like to find out more you can call 01492 650851.

Looking forward to spring.

It has been a busy few weeks and I'm glad to say we're finally open again for the 2010 growing season. We've rearranged some of the open shopping areas and had a good old clean up (it's amazing how long it takes to dispose of old pots and containers). If you're new to the nursery you can find us on Holyhead Road (the A55) running through Betws-y-Coed in the beautiful Conwy Valley, Snowdonia.
Over the next few weeks we'll be gearing up with an almost daily intake of stock mainly sourced from our own greenhouses in Glan Conwy. In particular we'll be looking forward to bringing you a fine selection of Conwy Valley grown bedding plants and some of the healthiest, sought after hanging baskets in the area. In fact they are so popular that you can see them on display outside the many hotels and shops in the village. We're taking orders now and will be happy to fill your own baskets to your own specification. Please contact Matthew on 01690 710870.
We look forward to seeing you soon. Our opening times are 10am to 5.30pm daily and extended across bank holidays.

Plants to make you smile.

Since we opened the nursery in 2001 we have established a good reputation for the quality of our Conwy Valley grown clematis. The plants are probably one of the most popular we sell and spectacularly brighten up any garden.
Clematis can be grown in a number of different ways - In tubs in varying situations e.g. on a patio. In rockeries, allowing the plant to grow wherever it wants. Through shrubs and trees. Up trellis and pergolas. Against a wall or fence. To cover a building e.g. shed or garage. There are differing species of clematis that are more suitable to grow in for the ways listed above e.g. to cover a shed you would plant a vigorous variety like a Montana compared to a large flowering hybrid such as The President.

Alys Fowler The Edible Garden

Ever considered eating what you grow in your back garden? When we mean that it's not the obvious home grown veg but interesting plants such as violas, pansies, calendula, dwarf varieties of nasturtrium and herbs such as thyme. You might be surprised to learn that the leaves of these plants can make fantastic additions to food and cooking. To find out more check out the new Alys Fowler book 'The Edible Garden' published by BBC Books priced at £18.99.
